For the last two days I have been carving mostly carrots and catfish out of Styrofoam! And I paint them now. To get to the worktable I walk around the elevated social housing piece, and the bulk of thick rope coming down from its extended arm and accumulating at its foot. Every time, also, as I imagine unrolling the rope and letting it wander across the space serendipitously, I can see it become a path which would be marked, at regular intervals, by three very different constructions/stations, each carrying a highly symbolic meaning related to the issues raised by the ‘Tale of Charleston’ and ‘- of Reparations’.
If I consider these future seven or so steps (a horn of plenty – a ‘fruit of the sea’ tray – an urban greenhouse – a fish farm – and three not-yet-imagined stations), successful … then I may declare an end to this installation! It has to have an end so that I can come back to the diary in earnest. Daily entries, editing of earlier pages and the attached research will be a full-time art job for quite a long time. Even more so since I intend to build one or two kitchens in parallel to the writing! Then, I may consider resting … possibly in peace.
